Brief Summaries of UN Resolutions - Economic & Social Council, 2000-2009
Resolution 2009/14: Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women (28 July 2009) -- This resolution urges the international community to continue to give special attention to the promotion and protection of the human rights of Palestinian women and girls, stresses the importance of efforts to increase their role in decision-making with regard to conflict prevention, and demands that Israel comply fully with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in order to protect the rights of Palestinian women and their families. The resolution calls upon Israel to facilitate the return of all refugees and displaced Palestinian women and children to their homes and calls upon the international community to continue to provide urgently needed assistance, especially emergency assistance, integrating a gender perspective. The resolution requests the Commission on the Status of Women and the Secretary General to continue to monitor the situation.
Resolution 2009/34: Economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan (31 July 2009) -- Expressing grave concern at the extensive destruction by Israel, in particular, in connection with its construction of the wall, contrary to international law, in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Expressing grave concern at the increasing number of deaths and injuries of civilians, including children and women, and emphasizing that the Palestinian civilian population must be protected in accordance with international humanitarian law. This resolution calls for the lifting of mobility restrictions as the apply to the Palestinian people, demands that Israel comply with the Protocol on Economic Relations, and calls upon Israel to restore and replace civilian properties, vital infrastructure, agricultural lands and governmental institutions that have been damaged or destroyed as a result of its military operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. It reiterates the call for the full implementation of the Agreement on Movement and Access of 15 November 2005, particularly the urgent and uninterrupted reopening of all crossings into the Gaza Strip. It furthermore calls upon all parties to respect the rules of international humanitarian law, and to refrain from violence against the civilian population. The resolution reaffirms the inalienable right of the Palestinian people and the Arab population of the occupied Syrian Golan to all their natural and economic resources and calls upon Israel, the occupying Power, to cease its destruction of homes and properties, economic institutions and agricultural lands and orchards in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and furthermore calls upon Israel, the occupying Power, to end immediately its exploitation of natural resources. The resolution reaffirms that the construction and expansion of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the occupied Syrian Golan, are illegal and calls for the full cessation of all settlement and settlement-related activity. The resolution reaffirms that Israel's ongoing construction of the wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including in and around East Jerusalem, is contrary to international law. The resolution requests the Secretary-General to submit to the General Assembly a report on the implementation of this process.
